Naomi

Naomi

Their previous album—2011's No Witch—found The Cave Singers turning toward electricity to bring new dimensions to their largely acoustic tunes. With 2013's Naomi, the band adds a new member and dials back the voltage (though it drives the garage blues of "It's a Crime" without completely stealing its mojo from The Black Keys). Fleet Foxes' multi-instrumentalist Morgan Henderson provides color and holds down the bottom end as a sure-footed bassist, letting the group cruise freely through the folky feel of "Week to Week" and "Evergreens," with its Paul Westerberg–on–the–emotional–ledge vibe. Rhythms often box with themselves on tunes like "Canopy" (resembling something from Paul Simon's Graceland) and "Shine," but the pummeling drums of "Karen's Car" lead the way for a classic psychedelic electric guitar to chime in with an elemental lick. When it's time to rock, The Cave Singers hit it head-on for the Camper Van Beethoven–like sunny-day bounce of "Easy Way."
