Tara Nevins has been a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist with roots-rock band Donna the Buffalo since 1987. Along with writing 11 of the 13 tracks on Wood and Stone, Nevins sings and plays guitar, fiddle, and accordion. She's joined by the great multi-instrumentalist and producer Larry Campbell (Bob Dylan, Levon Helm) and the two create some magic together as they weave various roots music styles into their sound. “The Wrong Side” has a Western swing feel, “All I Ever Needed” and “You’re Still Driving That Truck” are zydeco flavored, they tear through the old-timey sounding instrumental “Nothing Really,” and the haunting country soul of “Tennessee River” showcases Campbell’s moody guitar work. He also shines on banjo, slide guitar, and pedal steel, embellishing the songs without overwhelming them. Nevins and Campbell are backed by Justin Guip and Levon Helm on drums (the album was recorded at Helm’s studio), bassist Byron Isaacs, and harmony vocals from Allison Moorer (“The Wrong Side”) and Jim Lauderdale (“Snowbird”). Rich and earthy, Wood and Stone was worth the wait.
