When Doves announced a hiatus in 2010, fans may have assumed it wouldn’t be the last of the band. Well, at least it wasn’t the last of vocalist Jimi Goodwin, and with this solo outing he shows that while Doves' moody drama was a perfectly fitting vehicle for his particular sound, there are plenty of other settings that pair well with his style and tone. “The Ghost of the Empties” falls into the Mark Eitzel singer/songwriter camp, with edges where you don’t expect them and no shortage of lyrical beauty. “Keep My Soul in Song” purrs as if searching for a late-night jazz lounge in which to settle. Goodwin played most of the music himself here, especially impressive when you encounter the horns and controlled chaos of “Man v. Dingo,” the sensuous backbone of “Didsbury Girl,” the tightly wound “Lonely at the Drop,” and the electro heart of “Live Like a River.” The fired-up faux horns and keyboards of “Terracotta Warrior” and the propulsive, acoustic-driven ode “Oh! Whiskey” are standouts on a collection that reflects Goodwin's remarkable musicality.
