The members of the British quintet Hey Sholay hail from Sheffield and Leeds, but don’t assume the group sounds like another Arctic Monkeys–inspired outfit. “Wishbone (Wish Wish Wish)”—the opening track of its 2012 emoticon-monikered debut, ((O))—plays like Jeff Buckley fronting OK Computer-era Radiohead. The following “My Blood” strews the English guitar-pop formula through a psychedelic mangle and shoots it out the other end with heady results. And yet the album’s epic shows that Hey Sholay is a band with a sound that can’t be pigeonholed. “Shut the Devil at the Backdoor/A Day in the Country, Berlin” works a magical mix of genre-ambiguous indie pop over intricate arrangements that steer free of any possibilities of prog-rock comparisons. At just more than nine minutes, “Golden Is the Colour of the Sun (Run Rabbit)” plays like an intergalactic indie rock opera built for the post-Britpop generation.
