While it is advisable that anyone interested in the works of Tim Buckley check out his individual albums and live performances, this Best Of is a solid, general overview of his entire career. Since he had few “hits” and conceived his work in the album format, there will be questions over the selections, but there isn’t anything here that doesn’t belong. “Song For Janie” is from his self-titled first album when Buckley was only 19 and it shows his youth and his brilliance. His career was one of constant motion and listening to these eighteen tracks, one hears something completely different throughout. “Once I Was” was a brilliant anti-war single. “Strange Feelin’” dipped into an improvisatory folk-jazz mode. “Happy Time,” “I Must Have Been Blind” and “The River” bring forth the timeless mastery of his Blue AfternoonLP. “Song to the Siren,” made popular by the Goth outfit This Mortal Coil, is from his unmatchable Starsailor collection. His covers of Fred Neil’s “Dolphins” and Tom Waits’ “Martha” become Buckley songs through his artistic dominance.
