The Cleveland-based Voegele opens Don’t Look Away with “Chicago,” a bouncy, folky tune with rootsy electric guitars and her soulful voice taking the lead. “Only Fooling Myself” is easily the album’s catchiest cut, empowered by a soaring chorus that homes in on Voegele’s vocal prowess. She exposes a brawnier side to her singing in “One Way or Another,” which juxtaposes a jangly tunefulness with tougher inflections that recall some of Ani DiFranco’s stronger moments. On her ballads, Voegele’s songwriting talents take higher flight. Check out the heartfelt “It’s Only Life” and the moving “Kindly Unspoken.”
