Valentine

Valentine

Valentine is a real treasure. Compiled in 2007, this collection boasts 12 previously unreleased songs that Mary Hopkin recorded between 1972 and 1980. It begins with a lilting cover of "With You or Without You" by the relatively unknown folk singer Liz Thorsen before Hopkin's own "Hope Is" gets her lovely voice inflecting with her signature high-ranged trill — the one that influenced fantastical singers such as Kate Bush and Marissa Nadler. Her plaintive take on Pentangle's "No Love Is Sorrow" is void of the original's medieval instrumentation, but her voice makes up for it as you can really hear the purity of her pristine tone as well as her pitch and breath control. The production gets a bit more orchestral and panoramic on "Life Begins Again" (another Hopkin original); with a mix indicative of the mid-'70s, it almost sounds like she's taking a cue from Fleetwood Mac's success. The brightest gems in Valentine shine on a couple of back-to-back Emitt Rhodes covers — a floating rendition of "Only Lovers Decide" and a folk-rock take on "Trust Once More."
