Costa Rica’s Cocofunka have always blended rock power chords and reggae’s lilt with the tropical rhythms surrounding their jungle homeland—but here frontman Javier Arce also folds the vibrant sounds of Trinidadian carnival and Jamaican mento into his smooth fusion of equatorial pleasures. “Chúcaro” basks in old-school calypsonian guitar, “Oso Perezoso” gets weird and dubby, and jittery club-pop cut “Coleccionista” channels the spirit of Phil Collins gone tropical. But for all the churning, sunburned funk, Cocofunka’s thinking seriously about Latin American identity, as on atmospheric closer “Perseguidor,” a nod to Argentine literary legend Julio Cortázar.
