The Saving One

The Saving One

On their fourth studio album Starfield emphasizes intimacy, nuance and dynamics to impressive effect. As before, the well-burnished harmonies of brothers Tim and Jon Neufeld define the group stylistically. A thoughtful eloquence — underscored by stately pianos and lustrous acoustic guitar — make songs like “No Other Savior” and “Absolutely” stand out as modern rock hymns. Especially moving is “Something to Say,” a believer’s quietly intense confession of doubt. The Saving One isn’t all subdued exercises in soul-searching, however — “Glory is Rising,” “Top of Our Lungs” and the David Crowder-like “Overwhelm” are ecstatic celebrations of faith. Starfield manages to introduce some distinctive arrangement touches — like the rumbling drums in “Declaration of Dependence” — without indulging in artsiness. Most of all, they manage to tell personal stories within the context of worship, as “Rediscover You” shows. The Saving One offers a smart, individual take on the now-familiar worship genre with honesty and reverence.
