Other Worlds

Other Worlds

Taken by Trees' previous album, 2009's East of Eden, was recorded in Pakistan, while this follow-up, 2012's Other Worlds, was worked over in Hawaii. Taken by Trees is the project of Victoria Bergsman, a Swede takes her locations seriously. The change in real-time atmosphere is reflected in the easier, leisurely rhythms and textures heard throughout. The surf waves and Jack Johnson–style island grooves of "Only You" would sound unlikely in the politically volatile land of Pakistan. Here, producer Henning Furst ensures that the vibe is kept mild and spacious with an emphasis on dub, from the obviously titled "Indigo Dub" through to the spare "I Want You," where minimal keyboards and solid bass lines bring together just enough instrumentation for Bergsman's vocals to float. Ambient sounds like summer rain and thunder underscore the island theme, along with strategically placed pedal-steel guitars that add a sense of modest glory to the opening one-two punch of "Horizon" and "Highest High." This is subtle music that grows like ivy, clinging to everything it touches.
