Great Big Fire-Show

Great Big Fire-Show

Great Big Fire-Show crackles with country funk and edgy, Southern-fried rock 'n' roll. Led by singer/songwriter/guitarist Megan Huddleston, the Charlottesville, Va., quartet romps and rolls through a compact and well-crafted set of songs. With lyrics like literate puzzles to solve, Huddleston looks at love and life from darkly humorous angles. Metaphors feature armed rabbits and railroads, buffalos and bees, conflagrations, and the Alamo, while her clever wordplay and sly vocal hooks burrow in deep. Her acrobatic voice slips and slides from the playful kiss-off tune “Your Own Life” to the menacing “One Eye Open,” with razor-wire barbs balanced by moments of tenderness and vulnerability. The terse, tight band swerves with each tempo twist, from the gritty slide-guitar groove of “S****ty Limousine Ride” to the strutting standout “Buffalo” and the melodic charm of “Waynesboro.” Rhythmically rich and featuring just the right amount of quirkiness, Great Big Fire-Show is a solid second release by Mister Baby.
