A legendary jazz-funk drummer from New York, Lenny White has been recording professionally since the late '60s and has worked with a wide range of artists, including Miles Davis (on his landmark Bitches Brew), Freddie Hubbard, Stanley Clarke, and Jaco Pastorius. Over the years he's released more than a dozen solo albums, plus group projects with Twennynine, Azteca, and Chick Corea's fusion super-crew Return to Forever, in addition to producing for the likes of Wayne Shorter, Grover Washington Jr., and even Big Daddy Kane. Recorded in concert in 1997, Lenny White Live is a six-track album that revisits several tracks from his mid-'90s release Present Tense. His band here includes Mark Ledford, Bennie Maupin, Donald Blackman, Victor Bailey, and Patrice Rushen. Lenny White Live is undeniably funky and easy to get into. Standout selections include "Whew! What a Dream (Alternate Version)," "Pic Pocket," and "Wolfbane."
