Booyakka! Booyakka!

Booyakka! Booyakka!

Though never as famous as his sparring partner Shabba Ranks, Ninjaman—born Desmond John Ballentine—was still a pretty entertaining figure in ’80s and ’90s dancehall, an unrepentant badman with a voice as smooth and penetrating as the guns he so compulsively rapped about. But more than content, it was his delivery that set him apart: He could go hard (“How Master God World a Run”), he could go melodic (“Go Put It Down”), he could warble and dance on the beat with a spontaneity that made even routine patter sound electric (listen to how he stutters through “Disarm Them” like a remix of himself in real time). The routine was, unfortunately, more than a routine: After rebranding himself as a born-again gospel singer in the late '90s, then rebounding back to ragga, Ballentine was given a life sentence for murder in 2017. Still, Booyakka! Booyakka! stands out, a lowercase-c classic of ’90s dancehall.
