Damn

Out of the ashes of the heavy psychedelic funk group, Done For Good, rises an unexpected phoenix in the form of Poor Man's Poison. Gone are the screaming, the guitar assault, and most notably, the drums. Still present are the great sensibilities of everyone involved, tastefully detailed production, instrumental proficiency, and a heavy emphasis on songwriting. It is also worth noting that the group has completely shifted 'genres', morphing into an entirely acoustic country folk group. Is it a good change? Absolutely. If you can imagine Townes Van Zant in 2009, it's kind of like that. If you can imagine Buffalo Springfield really liking metal riffs and drinking beers while sitting on porches, it's kind of like that. If you ever kind of wanted to like Jack Johnson, but he was too much of a p***y, well, this could be that too. Everything is so utterly wooden and calm, while simultaneously being bass-driven and toe-tappingly awesome. There isn't a whole lot of sonic variance on the album, and that is one of its assets. It's a mood piece, to be put on for an hour while you're relaxing, being introspective, or having a conversation. It's completely non-intrusive, but it can be captivating if one chooses to pay attention. That's because the songs are great. They are short stories of regular life, poverty, and lament. Hacker has become a better lyricist and vocalist. The harmonies are well done and the words are all very blunt, honest, moving, occasionally funny, and never too flowery. One of the coolest things is the addition of the mandolin, which is constantly picking up a storm, or strumming up a...uh...hurricane... or something like that. Anyway, the point is that this is very good, honest music, and it deserves any recognition it receives, even if that recognition is simply the fact that I'll be playing it again, right now, on the first rainy day of the year. Love it guys!! This album is amazing!! Every song is great! this is one of those albums that you dont have to skip the cd to get to a "good song." Wonderful, 5 stars!! Bravo!! Can't wait to see you play in concert! <3 Lizi-cakes

Hooked!

This has been the only CD I've listened to for the past 2 months. I was hooked a soon as I pressed play. I haven't been this excited about a group since I discovered Grateful Dead in high school. Solid music and clever lyrics. (And they harmonize better than The Dead of course) They sound like they've been playing together for years -I don't know why it took me so long to find them.
