Better Days (Live)

Better Days (Live)

Recorded live at the Faith Center in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Better Days reaffirms Jonathan Nelson’s ability to render Spirit-infused inspiration with an elegant touch. The gospel singer/composer’s sophomore album is a nonstop celebration of God’s redemptive power and forgiveness. As a singer, Nelson knows how to stir believers to a fever pitch, as well as lead them into moments of quiet contemplation. His vocal ensemble group Purpose shines throughout the album, lending especially luminous support to the ballad “I Am Your Song.” Nelson stretches gospel’s boundaries with the rippling island beat of “Cry Holy” and the irresistibly funky groove of “Praise Saved My Life.” Tunes like “Expect the Great” (spotlighting singer Kierra “Kiki” Sheard) and “Called to Be” suggest the ‘70s soul sounds of Earth, Wind & Fire and The Commodores. More traditional but no less compelling are “Another Way” (featuring Jonathan’s twin brother, Jason, on vocals) and a fiery medley of Tasha Cobbs’ “Smile” and Matt Redman’s “Better Is One Day.” Nelson covers a wide span on Better Days while remaining faithful to the Word.
