Rin Tin Tiger's self-titled debut EP featured songs originally written for a previous project of brothers Sean (bass) and Kevin Sullivan (lead vocals, guitar, harmonica). Toxic Pocketbook has fresh material and is the true debut of Rin Tin Tiger's raucous new alt-folk band, which is nicely rounded out by drummer Andrew Skewes-Cox. Toxic Pocketbook opens with a killer tune that recalls vintage Bob Dylan. It's a rollicking, fun number with crashing waves of cymbals carrying Kevin Sullivan's acoustic guitar, upfront vocals, witty lyrics, and warbling harmonica buoyed by his brother's roiling bass lines. "Pretty Looks" opens up with a different feel, giving a taste of the many shades of folk-rock ahead; its off-kilter pop sweetness evokes The Mountain Goats, with an almost-jittery energy in the thumping toms and jangling guitar. Direct and introspective lyrics are easy to love: "If you could, just for once, look hideous"; "There's a thorn bush in my throat, always breaking up my words." Oh, yeah.
