While I'm Waiting

While I'm Waiting

The success of the inspirational movie Fireproof has raised the profile of John Waller, thanks to the placement of his tune “While I’m Waiting” in the film. The track (first heard on his debut album The Blessing) provides the title for his 2009 sophomore release. Waller’s slow-burning vocal style and Average Guy demeanor give his prayerful lyrics the feel of personal confessions. Songs like “Faith Is Living,” “Quest,” and “Dead Man Walking” come across as both declarations of faith and acts of soul-searching. As a songwriter, Waller draws heavily upon Biblical themes and imagery throughout the album, whether he is recounting Christ’s crucifixion (“Of All the Places”) or meditating upon spiritual contentment (“Perfect Peace).” While I’m Waiting is mostly a tastefully-arranged midtempo affair, though “Quest” spices things up with some astringent guitar riffage and “Our God Reins Here” aims for a brawny arena-rock sound. The title song — heard here in two versions — remains an eloquent invocation of a believer’s walk with Christ.
