Home At Last

Home At Last

Fifteen years after Billy Ray Cyrus' “Achy Breaky Heart” conquered country radio, he’s rejuvenated his career with Home at Last which is much more than a by-rote “comeback” album. The swagger that typified his early hits has been transformed into a mature sort of gravitas. Cyrus’ balladeer side gets plenty of exposure on yearning tunes like “Don’t Give Up on Me,””I Can’t Live Without Your Love” and “My Everything.” His rough-edged vocal tones serve him well on the blue collar broadside “The Buffalo” and the uplifting anthem “Stand.” The joys and pains of fatherhood are explored in the sensitive “Ready, Set, Don’t Go” (featuring daughter Miley Cyrus on a bonus track version). Billy Ray rounds out the album with credible (if not particularly revelatory) covers of such pop/rock favorites as “You’ve Got a Friend,””Brown Eyed Girl” and “Somewhere over the Rainbow.” Sparse, acoustic-oriented arrangements emphasize the family-friendly tone of the album.
