Before returning to the studio to cut their third album, Frijid Pink’s founding guitar player Gary Ray Thompson and singer Kelley Green had left the band. But their newly hired guitarist Craig Webb and singer Jon Wearing — along with added keyboard player Larry Zelanka (who was just considered a guest on the first two albums) ushered in not only a new era but an entirely new sound that had more in common with Deep Purple and Uriah Heep than the loud, bluesy, bar-band rock that comprised the Detroit band’s first two albums. The rotating Leslie speaker of Zelanka’s Hammond B-3 sets a spooky tone before “Miss Evil” opens with proggy undertones and an infectious groove akin to that of Sugarloaf’s “Green Eyed Lady,” albeit much harder in attack. The three-and-half-minute title-track is something of a pocket epic with its pomp, drama, mythology-inspired lyrics and ever-changing arrangements. Conversely, the mellow “Lazy Day” invokes images of summertime lakeside picnics with its cascading vocal harmonies and breezy melodies picked from a 12-string acoustic guitar.
