Tropicália 2

Tropicália 2

Though the title is a reference to Veloso and Gil’s storied past as the bad boys of ’60s Brazilian rock, this 1994 release is more electronic than psychedelic—though no less listenable. Richly textured, complex, and funky, Tropicália 2 draws on Brazil’s wealth of rhythmic and songwriting traditions, including axé ("Nossa Gente”) and samba ("Cinema Novo”). It also indulges Veloso and Gil’s more experimental side with the sound collage “Rap Popcreto” and even a Jimi Hendrix cover (“Wait Until Tomorrow”) reworked with insistent Brazilian percussion.
