Revelation

Revelation

As the Clark Brothers this sibling trio won top honors on Fox’s The Next Great American Band in 2007. With a name change and a Carrie Underwood tour behind them, they fill their debut long-player with bravura energy and hook-studded songwriting. Though the Sons of Sylvia have ties to Nashville, Adam Clark’s mandolin and his brother Austin’s dobro work are the main country touches found here. Revelation is an exercise in modern rock, with overtones of everything from U2 (“Give Me Love”) to Aerosmith (“50 Ways”) evident. Lead singer Ashley Clark radiates charisma throughout, mixing romantic urgency with heroic élan. “John Wayne” and “Love Left to Lose” are widescreen melodramas set to bracing rhythms, allowing Ashley to unleash his formidable vocal range. “Long Beach” and “Song of Solomon” smolder thoughtfully, while “The War Within” combines sound clips with a steamy groove. Most compelling is the title track, an exploration of identity invoking the ghosts of John Lennon and Elvis.
