Heartsoulblood

Heartsoulblood

There’s much to be said for genetics. Guitarist Devon Allman, Gregg Allman's son, obviously has the family’s sound in his blood. He also has the intelligence to team up with other talented musicians—including Cyril Neville, from another key Southern music family. All band members here also explore music outside of The Royal Southern Brotherhood, but it’s the kind of work that improves their chops. Listening to heartsoulblood is like slipping into something comfortable. The players settle into the grooves of “World Blues,” “Groove On,” “Here It Is," and “Let’s Ride” like it’s second nature, and the vibe is as laid-back as it is a celebration of living and of music. The rhythm section of bassist Charlie Wooton and drummer Yonrico Scott (who’s worked wonders with Derek Trucks) provide fluid, flexible settings and a genuine heaviness on “Callous,” which has a riff reminiscent of The Beatles’ “Come Together.” Neville’s soulful vocals behind “She’s My Lady” reveal the group’s gentle, romantic side.
