My Last Go Round

My Last Go Round

Recorded live at a 2002 Harvard University concert, My Last Go Round brings closure to Rosalie Sorrels’ lengthy career as a touring folk artist. The now-venerable “Traveling Lady” bids farewell to the road in high style, inviting such luminaries as Jean Ritchie, Peggy Seeger, Christine Lavin, and Loudon Wainwright III to join her on stage. Sorrels’ time-seasoned vocals lend poignancy to “My Last Go Round,” “The Telling Takes Me Home,” “Traveling Lady,” and similar odes to dusty crossroads and distant friends. From the lonesome country twang of “Rock Salt and Nails” to the eerie fairy tale narrative of “Old Woman Tossed Up in a Bucket,” Rosalie reaches back to survey the full range of her repertoire. Between-song stories add a revelatory note to the evening. Among the guest stars, Ritchie takes top honors for her haunting a cappella performance of “Pretty Saro.” Closing the show is Sorrel’s eloquent rendition of Pete Seeger’s defiant “Old Devil Time.” By turns nostalgic, sardonic and indomitable, Rosalie makes this bittersweet occasion into a triumph. My Last Go Round is a must-have release for any fan of heartfelt folk music.
