Judging by its pavement-peeling song titles (“Overdrive” and “Car Jacked,” for instance), Bot’Ox’s long-awaited debut LP could have easily been a cloying concept album about cruise-control settings and speeding tickets. A real road-rage record, if you will. And while it’s definitely meant for midnight drives with the top down, Babylon By Car is also peppered with icy shades of synth pop (“Blue Steel”), indie rock (“Slow Burn”), and whatever you want to call the tense spoken-word scenes in “Tout passe, tout lasse, tout casse.” Not to mention such proven underground singles as “Crashed Cadillac” and the title track — extended edits that gain momentum with every passing minute, as left turns are taken with swift snippets of electro, disco, and classic rock.
