Mazes Remixed

Mazes Remixed

Who better to help remix Moon Duo’s Spacemen 3-referencing sophomore album, Mazes, than Sonic Boom? Originally limited to 500 pressings randomly distributed to indie record stores, Mazes Remixed is now available to the public at large. Spacemen 3’s founding member reworks two of the seven tracks here, starting with the opening “Scars,” where his Midas touch recalls 1990’s Spectrum with throbbing tones played over analog chirps and squeals. Sonic Boom’s remix of “Fallout” sounds enveloped in a blanket of snowy TV static and undulating ring-modulation, nicely contrasting singer/guitarist Erik “Ripley” Johnson’s vocals. The Cave “Organ Desert” remix of “Run Around” is another standout, where the original tune’s guitar line has been stripped away to reveal a bare-bones frame with plenty of room to add on all kinds of Moog-related tomfoolery. The Purling Hiss remix of “In the Sun” loops Johnson’s vocals over pounding beats and squealing guitar feedback. The Berlin-based Eagle Boston replaces the title track’s catchy guitars with foreboding drones.
