Under The Covers, Vol. 1

Under The Covers, Vol. 1

For over twenty years, Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs have kept the glow of ‘60s folk-rock alive through their music. Joining forces to cover archetypal hits (and neglected gems) from four decades ago is almost too obvious a project for these artists. But even if Under the Covers, Vol. 1 (2006) doesn’t radically stretch Sweet and Hoffs’ talents, it does offer some exquisitely sung and energetically played versions of classic material. Sweet adds some rock heft to balance Hoffs’ more airy pop instincts, a combination that works well on the Beatles’ “And Your Bird Can Sing” and Neil Young’s “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere.” Dylan’s “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue” and Sandy Denny’s “Who Knows Where the Time Goes?” are roughed up a little, while the Beach Boys’ “The Warmth of the Sun” and Michael Nesmith’s “Different Drum” are handled with reverence. Matthew and Susanna are at their best when they tap into the youthful idealism of songs like “The Kids Are Alright” and “She May Call You Up Tonight” — as their voices blend and soar, the blossoms of the Flower Power era bloom anew.
