Desolation Rose

Desolation Rose

Over the years, as trends in rock and pop music come and go, musicians devoted to a particular sound stick to what they do best and keep out-of-fashion genres alive and well. Sweden’s Flower Kings have devoted themselves to early-‘70s progressive rock since the '90s, and they've kept their virtuosic chops sharp and engaging for listeners who enjoy challenging time signatures and grand orchestral themes. Comparisons to Yes, Peter Gabriel–era Genesis, and King Crimson validated The Flower Kings' efforts from the start. 2013’s Desolation Rose continues to live up to their high standards. The opening track—the nearly 14-minute “Tower ONE”—features their many strengths in one elongated song. This 18-track album follows the group’s interests in modern times (“Dark Fascists Skies,” “White Tuxedos”) with their familiar bleak worldview, but there's a generosity of the soul that transcends politics.
