Runaway

Kansas City blues artist Samantha Fish packs her solo debut album with dexterous guitar work, confident vocals, and smart, tradition-rooted songwriting. Coming off a successful album and tour as part of the Girls with Guitars blues trio, this gifted 22-year-old displays skill and vision far beyond her years. Fish knows how to lay down heavy riffage without becoming overbearing; her menacing lead work on “Down in the Swamp” and her furious ZZ Top–like soloing in “Leavin’ Kind” show taste as well as toughness. She blends the right amount of playfulness and desperation in the title tune and stirs up a bittersweet mood on a wistful cover of Tom Petty’s “Louisiana Ride.” As a singer, Fish pulls off a host of vocal transformations, switching from midnight thrillseeker (“Otherside of the Bottle”) to kittenish jazz chanteuse (“Feelin’ Alright”) without straining credulity. “Push Comes to Shove” (a feisty duet with guitarist/producer Mike Zito) takes her into Bonnie Raitt blues/rock territory. Whether blazing away or burning sweet ‘n’ low, Fish proves she's a talent to watch.
