Throwed In da Game

Throwed In da Game

Hot on the heels of Ghetto Dreams, Wreckshop Records assembled the second posthumous Fat Pat release, Throwed In da Game. Where Ghetto Dreams presented Pat as a solo star, this release locates him within the context of his extended musical kinfolk, comprised of members of Wreckshop Family and the Screwed Up Click. Anchored by Double D, D Gotti, E.S.G., and Pat’s older brother H.A.W.K., the posse here is right at home with the extra-fat beats. However, Pat is the obvious star. With his basso profundo voice, he manages to be simultaneously intimidating and melodic. While all of these songs are enjoyable in their present form, these tunes were designed to be screwed and chopped in the style of Pat’s mentor, DJ Screw, who is memorialized on “Jammin’ Screw.” The deep voices and echoes of old soul records cannot be fully appreciated until experienced at properly slowed speeds. The record’s sonic signature would have a lasting impact not only on Houston hip-hop, but on Southern rap at large.
