Greatest Hits

Sam & Dave started recording in the early '60s, making obscure singles with labels like Roulette and Marlin before signing with Atlantic and working exclusively with the team at Memphis upstart Stax Records. There, with help from songwriters Isaac Hayes and David Porter—plus the extraordinary house bands Booker T & The M.G.s and The Mar-Kays—the duo became chart-topping megastars, releasing a string of gigantic singles that would become timeless classics. Their infectious energy, charismatic interplay, and untouchable live sets won Sam & Dave fans all over the globe. They scored seven Top Ten hits between '65 and '68, including two No. 1 smashes—"Soul Man" and "Hold On, I'm Comin'." Changing tastes, label issues, and ongoing personal conflicts slowed down their career dramatically in the '70s, though they experienced a resurgence when The Blues Brothers hit it big. This album is a re-recording of Sam & Dave's signature anthems, originally released in 1978 under the name Sweet & Funky Gold. While the tracks aren't as perfect as the original Stax versions, these are still amazing songs from two of soul music's brightest stars.
