Son of Sam

Son of Sam

Stylistically, Krizz Kaliko is among the most fearless rappers working today. Even as he bounces through radically different sounds on 2013’s Son of Sam, he always has a tight grip on his concept and its execution. He dabbles in R&B (“Send Your Love,” “Kill for Your Lovin’”) and downer hip-hop (“Why So Serious,” “Scars,” “Unable”) without ever losing the underlying vigor. It’s near impossible to make a convincing merger of rap and metal, but “W.A.N.S.,” “Reckless,” and “Fingers” are the album’s highlights. The volcanic riffs prove to be the natural extension of Kaliko’s outsized flows.
