Hope on the Rocks

Hope on the Rocks

Toby Keith has found a niche currently as country music's Jimmy Buffett, a singer of good-time party tunes where the beer and women never stop flowing. The title track begins things on a melancholy note, as a look at those on life's downside, but with a chorus that breaks like sunlight over the horizon. "Scat Cat" throws a hard rock lick into a tale of family moonshiners. However, Keith hits his stride on high energy tunes such as "I Like Girls That Drink Beer," "Haven't Had A Drink All Day" and the old-timey "Cold Beer Country," where he's having a good time getting wasted. Perhaps sensing he's riding too high for most of the album, Keith turns reflective for the heartbreak of "Haven't Seen The Last Of You," "Missed You Just Right" and "You Ain't Alone," where the guitars make lonely squalls into the evening sky. The deluxe version features remixes of "Red Solo Cup" and "Beers Ago" from 2011's Clancy's Tavern and two live tracks.
