Released in conjunction with a documentary of the same name that depicts the idiosyncratic origins of the Brooklyn quintet, I'm with You collects songs from Grouplove's Seesaw tour, during which the band alternated between acoustic and electric sets. While Grouplove came to prominence as one of a handful of bands (fun., Neon Trees) whose naked exuberance was matched only by the kaleidoscopic nature of their sound, these tracks reveal a band whose influences go deeper than contemporary alt-pop. "Colours" shows a clear debt to the jerking rhythms and vocal theatrics of Modest Mouse, and the plodding bassline and raspy yelping of singer Christian Zucconi on "Raspberry" sound nicked from the Pixies playbook. Yet Grouplove's polyphonic spree is their own singular achievement; the euphoria is contagious, especially on the title track.
