Waterdrawn

Waterdrawn

On its sophomore album, The Horse’s Ha turns down its jazzier influences while emphasizing the British folk-rooted songcraft at the heart of its whimsical, immaculately realized sound. Core members Janet Bean (from Freakwater) and Jim Elkington (mainstay of The Zincs) invoke memories of Shirley Collins, Donovan Leich, and other U.K. folk icons in these tracks. Waterdrawn unfolds like a book of slightly twisted fairy tales, laced with pastoral imagery and embellished with woodwinds and strings. Bassist Nick Macri and drummer Charles Rumback lay down subtly attuned rhythms that help anchor Bean’s honeyed lead vocals and Elkington’s crystalline guitar lines. Songs like “Conjured Caravan,” “Dying Tree,” and “Stick Figure Waltz” are rich with acoustic textures that blend ethereal sweetness with darker undertones. From the good-timey campfire folk of “Hidey Hold” to the vintage country vibes of “A Stony Valentine” to the lilting button-box strains of “Sea Shanty,” The Horse’s Ha cover a good deal of sonic ground here, and the album’s lyrics capture delight and desire through a trippy haze. Waterdrawn is an entrancing ticket to a land of dreams.
