Live, Vol. 3

Live, Vol. 3

The Avett Brothers make a point of releasing numerous live albums, a testament to their belief in the spontaneity of the moment and the magic that's only achieved when fans are cheering the group onward. The studio albums are delicate and mannered by comparison. This is a free-for-all, with the North Carolina brothers playing to a hometown crowd that knows every word to the songs already in official circulation and most of the words to the ones not yet released. This may be a tad distracting in the quieter parts of "The Ballad of Love and Hate." But upbeat tunes like "Talk on Indolence," "I Killed Sally's Lover," "Paranoia in B Major," and "Kick Drum Heart" are taken to transcendent levels bordering on a religious experience. Live, Volume 3 makes it clear that Aug. 8, 2009, was a big night at the Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, N.C., for both band and audience.
