Sunshine

Sunshine

Brooklyn's Talk Normal took its name from a Laurie Anderson song and takes its cues from New York's post-punk and No Wave of yesteryear (Lydia Lunch, early Sonic Youth, DNA). The duo built its early work on the surge and release of challenging brashness and raw assault, and then the release that follows those moments. Sunshine, its sophomore LP, puts the faintest polish on those rusty-edged, abrasive attacks, with rhythmic guitar warpage on tunes like "Shot This Time" and playful, clattering, Anderson-esque tracks like "Cover" that pull the listener closer—albeit slyly. Musical partners Sarah Register and Andrya Ambro have known each other a long time, and one gets the sense that they're effortlessly in sync, with a shared vision for howling guitars, screeching saxophones, and combative drums. The way tunes like "Hurricane" and "Baby, You're Heart's Too Big" spin with vertiginous unsteadiness yet stay the course—with vocals intertwining and colliding before a sometimes surprise ending—speaks to two creative minds clearly in agreement.
