I Have Not Seen the Wind

I Have Not Seen the Wind

Listening to I Have Not Seen the Wind, it’s easy to imagine Arthur Alligood as a circuit-riding preacher making the rounds of weather-beaten churches across some Old West landscape. The Nashville-based Christian singer/songwriter’s third album is firmly in the folk balladeer tradition, though the spiritual hunger and alienation found in his lyrics are quite contemporary. Alligood’s austere but compassionate vision brings the likes of Bill Mallonee and Mark Heard to mind; his idealism invokes the Jesus Music artists of 40 years ago. Beneath the surface fragility of songs like “Show Some Heart” and “Time You Know” lies the unshakable faith found in classic hymnody. God moves through these songs as a mysterious but undeniable presence, speaking with a gently loving voice in “Keep Your Head Up” and shining through the exalted imagery in the title tune. Producer Kenny Hutson dresses up the album’s lean melodic lines with country-rock instrumentation, achieving a full but not overpowering sound on tracks like “Make Her Smile” and “When the Storm Meets the Sun.”
