From the energized opening sprint of “Skip Steps 1 & 3” onward, Superchunk’s second album finds the North Carolina indie rockers delivering equal doses of overdriven guitar roar and exhilarating, shout-along melodies. “Punch Me Harder” sees them gamely inherit Hüsker Dü’s legacy of light-speed, punk-powered pop, while “Tie a Rope to the Back of the Bus” uses a menacing, chugging riff as a rocket launcher for an anthemic ascent. Even when they steady the pace on midtempo grinds like “Tower,” their passion and vigor remain undiminished.
