Dizzy Polizzy

Dizzy Polizzy

Mike Polizze was once the only member of Purling Hiss, now a power pop trio. He continues to evolve as a songwriter and a performer, but the underground music scene first fell in love with his music when it heard the limited-edition lo-fi tapes compiled on Dizzy Polizzy. The Philadelphia guitarist and songwriter played around in the indie scene with Birds of Maya, sharing stages with Kurt Vile and The War on Drugs, while issuing tour-only cassettes and CD-Rs that never went beyond a few hundred copies. This 2014 edition of Dizzy Polizzy gathers 11 fine recordings that make excellent use of the distorted lo-fi sound. Acoustic guitars break into fuzz, and vocals often blend to make awkward harmonies. Mainstream pop fans will surely scratch their heads, but indie music fans accustomed to unusual presentations should find the noise here an interesting counterpoint to the gorgeous melodies lurking under such tunes as “She Don’t Mind,” “Sifting Through My Hands,” and “The Earth Creature.” The sound evolves over the course of the album but is still clearly within lo-fi standards.
