Punk Generation: Best of the Damned (Oddities & Versions)

Punk Generation is yet another compilation of Damned material. It shows little rhyme or reason, juxtaposing tracks that range from the obscure to pretty familiar. Many are live recordings, and the early songs here are performed in studio versions from the time of 1995's Not of This Earth album. The Damned was a phenomenal band in its heyday, and even the lesser-known material here shows relentless energy. In other words, the songs here are great, and no one should go home unsatisfied; however, there are more coherent ways to enjoy The Damned's catalog. If new fans start with a handful of studio albums—Damned Damned Damned, Machine Gun Etiquette, and The Black Album—and work outward from there, they'll cover more ground. Curios here include a live version of "Disco Man," a version of Iggy Pop's "Lust for Life," and The Electric Prunes' "I Had Too Much to Dream (Last Night)," a tune The Damned covered in the studio under the pseudonym Naz Nomad & The Nightmares.
