Over the course of two albums and singer Silvana Kane’s solo effort, Pacifika have established themselves with a blend of sultry vocals and a globally aware mix of acoustic instruments and modern electronic programming. The Vancouver-based trio have always had a flair for modern bossa nova, and “Satélites” fits the bill nicely as soft trumpet plays off of jazzy guitar licks and Kane’s Spanish lyrics float over the top. The sunny “So Much Here” has a straight lilting reggae groove, while “Yo Te Amo” and other tunes hint at syncopated riddims to a lesser degree. The tropical vibe is to be expected, but the band crank up the amps for a rocking “Panamerica” and “Las Bellazes” goes from spooky ambiance to a four-on-the-floor dance groove. Other interesting fusions include “Sal Y Brisa” cycling through bossa nova, pop, and dance, while “Bring It” moves from moody indie pop to anthemic rock to hazy dub. The acoustic guitar and voice intro to the closing “Soledad” turns into angelic pop, seemingly putting a bow on this well-crafted and engaging sonic confection.
