The Ultimate Yes: 35th Anniversary Collection

It's tough to go wrong with a huge batch of highlights from the long, rich career of the planet's premier prog rock band. Outside the box-set realm, Ultimate Yes is as comprehensive a guide to Yes as you'll find. Not every one of the band's many albums is represented, but each era of the constantly evolving ensemble is covered. With the Beatlesque ballad "Time and a Word," the collection reaches back to the days before guitar hero Steve Howe replaced founding member Peter Banks. Then we move on to Howe-era breakthrough tracks like the exultant "I've Seen All Good People" and the timeless classic rock radio staple "Roundabout." Ultimate Yes follows the band through their many personnel changes: "Tempus Fugit" hails from the period where new wave duo The Buggles replaced singer Jon Anderson and keyboard wizard Rick Wakeman; "Owner of a Lonely Heart" marks Yes' triumphant '80s comeback, with the return of Anderson and arrival of guitarist Trevor Rabin. A batch of live and/or previously unheard tracks sweetens the pot even further.
