Spanish Moss and Total Loss

Spanish Moss and Total Loss

The third album from Canada’s Shout Out Out Out Out is decidedly less Daft Punk/LCD Soundsystem than previous efforts, flowing oh-so-smoothly into electronic territory informed by house music, disco, and quietly pulsing Krautrock. “Now That I’ve Given Up Hope” and “Wayward Satellite” carve their grooves with pure disco beats and syncopated handclaps; they're tethered to solid bass lines, vintage-but-fresh synth undulations from analog machines, and lively real drums. There was bound to be a vocodor revival, and S.O.O.O.O. seems to be leading the charge. The six-piece outfit (with two drummers) eschews natural voices in favor of an effect that some might say is best in small doses. “Spanish Moss” has an easy, tropical vibe, with congas leading the way; those treated vocals may be a tad too much for such a pretty, organic-feeling song. But musically, there are enough cool, Yachts-meets-Datarock sounds going on to offset the repeated vocal style. The refreshing instrumental track “Knowing” owes a debt to OMD from back in the day, with alluring beds of pillowy synths under a crackling snare and bubbling piano.
