Trivial Occupations

Trivial Occupations

Francis Harris has made minimal techno (as Adultnapper) and dreamy deep house (in the duo Frank & Tony), but the New York producer’s third album under his own name strays further from the club than ever. The beats, when they’re there at all, are wrapped in foggy reverb, smeared synths, and muted trumpet solos, sounding more like abstract jazz. Following a beatless opener that tugs absentmindedly at the heartstrings, the 12-plus-minute “St. Catherine and the Calm” wends through shuffling grooves, minimalist mallets, and the omnipresent hiss of gentle rain; “Trivial Occupations” finds sanctuary in Genevieve Marentette’s devastating soul-jazz vocals and a rainbow of color courtesy of Darkside’s Dave Harrington on guitar. “Minor Forms” marks a late-album dance-floor flirtation, but the two closing tracks sink back into the most blissful ambient imaginable.
