Don't Slander Me

Don't Slander Me

Don’t Slander Me is that rare Roky Erickson release where his idiosyncrasies are largely muted and replaced with a hard rock focus; the singer and his makeshift backing band work in step with each other. Most of Erickson’s solo output consists of recordings of dubious fidelity (with Gremlins Have Pictures the lo-fi classic in the discography), but Don’t Slander Me was recorded in a professional recording studio with an engineer who knew how the equipment worked. “Burn the Flames” is a slow, bluesy rock tune that’s driven by Erickson’s quirky narration, but tunes such as the title track, “Bermuda," and “Starry Eyes” are classic underground rock tracks that remain fan favorites and are among Erickson’s most covered songs. Tunes like “Crazy Crazy Mama” and “You Drive Me Crazy” show his interest in ‘50s-styled rock ‘n’ roll.
