Norwegian folk singer Sinikka Langeland is celebrated for her delicate voice and mastery of the kantele, a Finnish table harp. For her debut on ECM Records, she teams with Scandinavian jazz musicians and incorporates the poetry of Norwegian woodsman Hans Børli to summon a majestic, wintry sound. The shimmering cymbals and chords of “Stjernestund” show the ensemble’s expressive command of tempo and color; “Saltstein” is both tough and tender, with Langeland’s melodies evoking the simplicity of rural life.
