Fiendish Shadows

Fiendish Shadows

As is often the case with groups that have recorded for a variety of labels and whose appeal continues for several generations, The Damned have released a number of live albums throughout the years that show the band in a variety of conditions. Fiendish Shadows features the Dave Vanian/Rat Scabies/Roman Jugg/Bryn Merrick lineup during a 1985-86 tour in support of Phantasmagoria. The mix can be a bit unpredictable in spots, but overall the sound quality's very good. The performances are strong throughout, with some tunes speeding up (as a live band is likely to do). Five cuts from The Damned's most recent album invigorate the setlist, which also includes covers of Iggy Pop's "Lust for Life" (then much less well-known) and The Electric Prunes' "I Had Too Much to Dream Last Night," which had appeared on The Damned's album credited to Naz Nomad & The Nightmares. Damned classics such as "Love Song," "Wait for the Blackout," and "New Rose" are also played with great heart. The official guess taken from Vanian's stage patter is that this gig took place in London.
