Mountaintops (Bonus Track Version)

Husband and wife team Jason Hammel and Kori Gardner bring their personal chemistry to bear on their musical relationship. Their telepathic abilities enable them to perform at a very high level. Mates of State take synth-pop and turn it into something that often swings. The excitable backing vocals that drive “Palomino” brings a frenetic energy, while the swooshing, out-of-control lower synth that dominates “Maracas” rubs up against a rhythm attack that’s remarkably flexible. “Basement Money” sends the vocals through some fascinating filters, while discussing the honest economics of keeping a band going. “At Least I Have You” adds brilliant hooks. “Total Serendipity” throws up a ‘60s dance groove with their ‘80s textures. The group sails through sounds that have their roots in the ‘80s, but still keep things up to date. “Mistakes” and “Change” work the slower, harder corners, with Gardner pulling out her best diva moves. “Desire” even suggests a vague connection to country music.
