Round Trip

Round Trip

After The Knack's second album, …But the Little Girls Understand, suffered in the shadow of its predecessor (the smash debut Get the Knack), the band took its time with its third album. The result was the excellent and underrated Round Trip. The Knack refined its attack, working with producer Jack Douglas (Cheap Trick, Aerosmith, John Lennon) to find new ways of bringing pop hooks to market. "Boys Go Crazy" caught the classic Knack immediacy, while "Another Lousy Day in Paradise" provided the usual hooks with an extra layer of tension underneath. "Art War," a tune the band had played since its early days, proved it still had a backlog of great tunes. "We Are Waiting" added a modern psychedelic vibe to its stretched-out melody. "Africa" threw in disciplined rhythms from drummer Bruce Gary, who remained an in-demand studio drummer throughout his career. "Pay the Devil (Ooo, Baby, Ooo)" was a touching ballad sung with tenderness by The Knack's leader, Doug Fieger.
