While he has never received the critical accolades of Van Morrison, Tim Buckley is equally as uncompromising and as singular a voice, and Buckley’s influence on other musicians has been sizable. It was 4AD Records’ This Mortal Coil’s cover of “Song to the Siren” that first rebroadcast Buckley’s greatness to a new generation and these 17 performances here show off Buckley’s incredible range. While no one is ever likely to replicate Buckley’s own genius, they are able to convey the emotive realism and the melodic adventurism that rests at Buckley’s heart. “Sing a Song for You” by Moose and the piano version of “Morning Glory” by Bel Canto’s Anneli Drecker and the Cocteau Twins’ Simon Raymonde set the tone. Mojave 3 take on the masterwork, “Love from Room 109” and its singer Neil Halstead reappears for “Phantasmagoria In Two.” Mark Lanegan adds a dark brooding vibe to “Café.” His musical partner Mike Johnson adds a similarly dark vision to “I Woke Up.” Other highlights include Cousteau’s spacey take on “Blue Melody” and Heather Duby’s organ-heavy interpretation of “I Must Have Been Blind.”
